Garbage, recycling & green bin basics
Knowing who collects each waste stream is the first step to getting collection day right in Orangeville. Here is a practical starting point for garbage, food scraps, recycling and items that need special handling.

Find your collection schedule
Dufferin County is responsible for Orangeville’s household garbage, organics, yard waste, bulky-item and white-goods collection. The Town’s garbage-and-recycling page directs residents to the County for schedules and waste-service information.
Check the current County calendar for your address and collection area. Seasonal services and holiday changes may differ from your usual routine. If you live in an apartment or another shared building, ask the property manager how the building’s collection is arranged.
Set out and sort your materials
Follow the County’s current set-out instructions, including collection-day timing, placement and container requirements. Routes can change because of winter weather, construction or snow removal, so check service updates rather than judging collection time by the previous week.
Keep materials visible and separated into the correct waste streams. For an unfamiliar item, use the County’s ‘Which Bin?’ tool or waste guide instead of guessing. Check current instructions for extra garbage, large items and special collections before putting them at the curb.
Use the green bin for organics
Dufferin County lists food scraps such as fruit and vegetables, meat and bones, dairy, leftovers, coffee grounds and eggshells as acceptable organics. Soiled paper products—including paper towels, napkins, tissues and greasy pizza boxes—are also listed. Remove food packaging before adding scraps.
Solid fats, grease and cooking oil can go in the green bin under local guidance; do not pour them in while liquid or dispose of grease down a drain. Follow the County’s current liner and container guidance. For garden material and seasonal yard-waste quantities, consult the organics page and collection calendar rather than treating every yard item as food waste.
Use the current recycling guidance
Residential recycling is managed by Circular Materials, with GFL handling local collection inquiries. This is separate from the County’s other household waste services.
Dufferin County reports that blue carts can be used as of April 1, 2026, replacing the earlier blue-box and blue-bag approach. Accepted materials have also changed. Use the County’s residential-recycling page and the current Circular Materials guidance for your community; older sorting lists may no longer apply.
Resolve a missed pickup or bin problem
First check current service notices and make sure your material met the set-out instructions. Then use the contacts listed for the correct service: recycling inquiries have a different contact from other missed collections.
The County’s waste-services and collection-issues pages list current help options. They also explain arrangements for new or replacement green bins and kitchen collectors. Confirm the process before visiting an office or purchasing a replacement container.
